4 out of 5 stars good deal   July 11, 2010

i am very happy with my netbook. it looks elegant and attracts the attention, everybody ask me where i bought from, how much..
my only issue, when i use internet explorer, suddenly pages go back even though i don't push the back button,i checked touch pad but i couldn't find anything that will solve the problem. Hereby i use now Google chrome and have no problem so i thing there is a problem together with explorer and windows 7 starter or anything else. i am not geek.

I bought this for my wife who was traveling a lot. I played with it when it came in and I was impressed. I don't do windows (Ubuntu) so not much to say about the OS other than it's not my choice but left it alone for now. She has been using MS forever. When she upgrades to something else so will the OS. She had a Toshiba laptop years ago, Win95 era, as a teacher and that one got banged around for years and held up great. I was already sold on Toshiba quality.

The only real weak spot is the speaker. And I say speaker - other reviews have been critical of the speakers. Mine has only one and it is embarrassing. Count on using either an external set, ear buds, or cans. The output quality is great but not through the speaker. Consider using the speaker for maintenance and testing only. Old IBM PCs system beeps sound better.

On to the pluses. Most everything else. I bought the brown - looks nice. Screen is clear and crisp. Obviously smaller. Keyboard works for me but I am an average typist. My son has used it, VERY fast typist and IT professional, and has no complaints. I don't like touch pads, any of them, so I added a small wireless mouse. There are key combos that will kill the pad and that works well.

Another universal complaint or comment is the battery bulge. I have a 15" Dell Vostro with a REAL battery bulge so that is not an issue with me. [I think the newer version of this has packed the battery in tighter.] Battery life is excellent. I did not do any specific testing but it will last all day without the cord. Again, that is not much of an issue for us the way we use it. Does help with all the power outages we have here.

I have not done a memory upgrade yet. We don't really need it for what she is using it for. When she passes it on I will upgrade both memory and OS (to Ubuntu).

Another tidbit has to do with the hard drive. There is a gravity defying interlock that can be adjusted. It keeps the drive heads from nose diving into the disk if the netbook is moved rapidly or is dropped. This can be adjusted if you have it on your lap and need to move for something like breathing or circulating blood - it is set very sensitive. A notch or two down and no more problems.

I got it for a good price and timely delivery.

This is a great netbook and I would recommend it, and have, and would buy another. It drops 1/2 star for the speaker and the other half star for the OS. The OS is is not under review just the netbook otherwise I would take off a couple stars for that. Can't take off 1/2 star so it gives me a chance to editorialize.

This replaced a HP notebook which was too heavy for travel. One of the reasons it was heavy is that is was jam packed with more crapware than the local landfill. I could not remove all the crapware so I gave the laptop away. But, back to the netbook. it is light, works well and was reasonably priced. I did the ram upgrade to improve the speed. This has met all my expectations and needs and I am satisfied with its performance.

3 out of 5 stars Needed assistance in using the keyboard   June 1, 2010

Being a novice in using a laptop, I can't believe it did't come with a manual...I realize the current rage is not to have to use one but it would certainly be a great help...any assistance on this?
